The layer of the solar atmosphere that is located above the photosphere and beneath the transition region and the corona. The chromosphere is hotter than the photosphere but not as hot as the corona. It is seen during eclipses as a bright red ring around the Sun, and the term burning prairie has been used to describe it.
The dark lines seen here are filaments. Brighter areas are active regions. They are hotter than their surroundings.
